Your Website Security Checklist (Save This One!)

Hey hey!

Over the weekend, one of my clients’ WordPress sites got hacked. 😬 Scary, right?

And here’s the thing: while I see this happen most often with WordPress, it can happen on any platform: Squarespace, Wix, Shopify, even custom-built sites. Hackers don’t care what platform you’re on; they care about vulnerabilities.

That’s why, as the business owner, it’s ultimately your responsibility to make sure you’re prepared. Not because you have to fix it yourself (in most cases - thank goodness!), but because you’re the one most impacted if your site goes down.

Here are a few simple things you can do now to protect yourself:

✅ Know where your domain is registered and who your host is
✅ Make sure your site is backed up daily (ideally stored separately)
✅ Change passwords often + use 2FA whenever possible
✅ Have a monitoring service (I love Sucuri — I use it myself!)

👉 Bonus tip for WordPress users: Update your plugins frequently — at least twice a month. If you’re not paying someone for this service, that responsibility falls on you.

If your site does get hacked, here’s your step-by-step:

1️⃣ Call/email your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.)
2️⃣ Call/email your hosting provider or platform (SiteGround, Squarespace, etc.)
3️⃣ Loop in your developer or tech support
4️⃣ Don’t make any changes until the experts assess
5️⃣ Focus on getting your site back live first, then clean up and secure

This is exactly why I created my freebie Protect Your Business Assets, so you know what critical information you need. Many business owners are unaware of who hosts their site or if they have a backup.

We got my client back online in about 90 minutes. On a Sunday. Across four time zones. 🙌 It was a true team effort.
